about

The thing about being kind of a grumpy dude is that you know that, eventually, some new thing will get under your skin. You don't know what it will be, though, and the discovery can be a nasty surprise. Nihilist references emphasize that the world isn't necessarily disposed to help out -- Sisyphus from Camus, and the phrase "engine of bones" comes from a character in David Mitchell's Cloud Atlas despairing at the role of man in an atheistic universe.

Even though it's written in the second person, this is really a song about my own busted attitude. Thematically, in an album about relationships, this track serves to acknowledge that I bring my own issues to the table. It's still my album, though, so even as I admit to imperfections I'm going to throw in some neat chord voicings with open strings and a cool guitar solo. Damn if I'm going to be flawed and not awesome at the same time.

=====

lyrics

you don't believe that beauty lies
in the eye
of the beholder

instead you find it in the grain
of the chip
on your shoulder

all you want is a place to hide
an infirmary for your wounded pride
you could tear this world apart
looking for something to do

I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?
I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?

every day you rail against
whatever
comes closest

it all runs together, though
the same problems
in different poses

oh, you pitiful engine of bones
spinning your wheels out here alone
you keep taking this world to heart
for not being brave or new

I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?
I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?

it's a shame there isn't more to celebrate than this
we're just rolling around, getting our Sisyphus kicks

the feeling hangs around like smoke
it gets into our hair and clothes
you're still waiting for the world to start
looking for someone like you

I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?
I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?

I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?
I never know which way you're facing
which side is the blind side going to be?

about

The Napoleon of Crime Washington, D.C.

"He is the Napoleon of crime, Watson. He is the organizer of half that is evil and of nearly all that is undetected in this great city. He is a genius, a philosopher, an abstract thinker. He has a brain of the first order . . . My horror at his crimes was lost in my admiration at his skill." -- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, "The Final Problem" ... more
