about

This song examines the notion that withdrawing from the world is even a realistic or desirable possibility. There's a certain view of masculinity that prizes a kind of surly isolation, where you crack wise, never reveal emotions, and then unfailingly do the right thing -- think Han Solo or Rick Blaine (the phrase "tough without a gun" comes from a description of Bogart's onscreen persona). The problem comes when you have successfully sealed yourself off and discover that it's not all it's cracked up to be.

lyrics

I bit apart the kiss
a fruit with the sweetest juices flowing
I dropped what I didn't need
like seeds in soil where nothing's growing

I got out, but I didn't get away
there must be something wrong with me these days

and yeah, I know it's cold
but hey, what can you do?
I guess I should have known
that they get you with the frostbite blues

I close up like a fist
open arms only waste our time
I guess I still believe
it's not the same if it isn't hard to find

I just don't see what there is to share
you open your heart, you get blood everywhere

and, god, it's such a mess
and every time it's new
so you learn to live with less
'til they get you with the frostbite blues

don't wanna live like a raw nerve, honey
exposed and wired, shocked and stunned
I wanna be as hard as diamonds
real tough without a gun
I know I'm not the only one

if you let nothing in
you've got nothing to lose
but it's hard to say you win
once they get you with the frostbite blues

about

The Napoleon of Crime Washington, D.C.

"He is the Napoleon of crime, Watson. He is the organizer of half that is evil and of nearly all that is undetected in this great city. He is a genius, a philosopher, an abstract thinker. He has a brain of the first order . . . My horror at his crimes was lost in my admiration at his skill." -- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, "The Final Problem" ... more
